The EU Center of California holds a long-lasting tradition of presenting a biannual “State of the European Union Address.” This Fall, we are honored to host a panel discussion on current events in the European Union– including the refugee crisis, Russia and Ukraine, the economic recovery, EU foreign and defense policy, and the Paris attacks — led by the Director of the European Union Center, Dr. David Andrews (Scripps College). He will be joined by Drs. Hilary Appel and Jennifer Taw (Claremont McKenna College) as well as Dr. Juli Minoves-Triquell (University of La Verne).
The event is free and open to the public. Seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please feel free to bring your own lunch. If you wish to purchase a lunch, the Malott Commons Dining Hall opens at 11:15 a.m. Doors open to the Hampton Room at noon.

Steven Lee Myers, New York Times Journalist and author of The New Tsar: The Rise and Reign of Vladimir Putin, will discuss details of Putin’s climb to power as Russia’s president from his childhood of abject poverty in Leningrad, to his rise through the KGB. Myers will shed light on what informs Putin’s worldview, what drives him, and what is behind his recent moves in Ukraine and beyond.
Steven Lee Myers has worked at The New York Times for twenty-six years, seven of them in Russia during the period when Putin consolidated his power. He spent two years as bureau chief in Baghdad, covering the winding down of the Iraq War, and now covers national security issues. He lives in Washington, D.C.
